Position Summary
The Unit Leader plays a critical role in supporting bedside nurses to ensure safe, high-quality care and achieve both departmental and hospital-wide goals. Working closely with the Nurse Manager, this role blends leadership, clinical skill, and strong communication to drive unit performance and patient satisfaction. The Unit Leader is a liaison among staff, management, patients, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams—leading by example and promoting a culture of accountability and excellence.

Unit Leader – Nursing – Med/Surg Key Responsibilities
In partnership with the Nurse Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, the Unit Leader will:
- Support and model the Prestigious Hospital’s Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors
- Ensure patient care adheres to all hospital, regulatory, and evidence-based standards
- Act as a positive role model for nursing, offering mentoring and support to staff across all shifts
- Lead and monitor unit-based quality and performance improvement initiatives
- Flex schedule as needed to support unit coverage and clinical leadership
- Adhere to budget guidelines while ensuring appropriate nursing resources
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams for optimal patient care
- Develop and implement best practices for nursing care delivery
- Participate in patient care and take on clinical assignments as needed
- Promote continuous education, competency, and participation in shared governance among staff
- Join committees, task forces, and special projects as assigned
- Maintain a safe environment in line with accrediting/regulatory standards
- Demonstrate team-building principles and collaborate across disciplines
- Lead efforts to exceed nationally benchmarked patient satisfaction scores
- Develop measurable action plans to address any patient or nursing satisfaction gaps
- Be a proactive and positive change agent for unit and hospital initiatives
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Unit Leader – Nursing – Med/Surg Qualifications & Experience
- Current NY State RN License required
- BSN required (MSN preferred)
- Minimum one year of RN experience in the area of specialty preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in nursing and patient care
- BCLS certification required
- ACLS certification required (NICU & OR RNs excluded; timeline applies for new hires)
- PALS certification required for specified departments (timeline applies for new hires)
- NRP certification required for NICU, L&D, and Mother-Baby Unit RNs (timeline applies)
- Prior leadership or management experience strongly preferred
- At least two years of clinical experience in unit specialty preferred
- Ability to function independently as a staff RN
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical nursing skills

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Exposure to clinical chemicals as per SDS guidelines
- 85% mobility required during shift
- Ability to remain stationary for extended periods
- Regular lifting/moving of up to 50 lbs and patient transfers with assistance
- Fast-paced, high-interruption environment requiring continuous focus
- Ability to respond rapidly to changing clinical situations
- Must be able to detect and respond to emergency signals
- Frequent use of computers, equipment, and devices
- Must be capable of prolonged concentration despite interruptions
- Must retain and apply multiple instructions throughout the day
